Camrose Main Street Project

Camrose joined the Alberta Main Street Program in late 2000 and is one of 23 communities in the province to be a Main Street community.

The Camrose Main Street Project has been involved in the restoration and enhancement of sixteen buildings in the Downtown.

One of the first projects was the sensitive rehabilitation of the first general store built in 1904 by Duncan Sampson.

Four buildings that stand side-by-side on 50th Street are LaScala Jewellers, Precision Vacuum, Cobblers and Craftsman and the Groves Drugstore, all either restored or enhanced by the Main Street Program.

The LaScala building was built in 1910 by photographer Chris Langbell who took wedding and family photos in Camrose from 1904 until he sold the business in 1961. On the roof of the building a north facing skylight can be seen that allowed natural light into the second floor studio.

The formal Main Street Project concludes in Camrose at the end of 2008. One of the final projects is the restoration of the façade of the 100 year old Bailey Theatre.
